Sonoma County Weather and Climate
Sonoma County weather is characterized by moderate temperature and rainfall.
The temperatures in the inland valleys in the summers range in the 80's, and may occasionally exceed 100°. Even on the warmest summer days, though, Sonoma weather enjoys evenings that cool down to the 50s. Winter can sometimes bring temperatures a few degrees below freezing.
Coastal temperatures are cool throughout summer, with night temperatures usually falling into the high 40's and low 50s. In the winter the temperatures are seldom below freezing. The Sonoma Coast experiences fog year 'round. During the summer months the coast is veiled in clouds. Misty rain may fall during the evening, bringing enough moisture to keep the coastal hills green. If you are looking forward to a visit to Sonoma's beautiful beaches, before you jump into the surf, be forewarned that seawater temperature ranges from around 53° in winter to 55° in late summer and fall.
Santa Rosa enjoys a Mediterranean climate that horticulturist Luther Burbank described as "...the chosen spot of all this earth as far as Nature is concerned." The Mediterranean climate provides temperatures in the 80s, sometimes rising into the high 90's for a couple of weeks out of the year. Winter temperatures are usually in the mid-30s to mid-50s. The average annual rainfall of about 30 inches per year falls mostly from December to March, with very little the rest of the year.
